Description
A review is given of past and future deep inelastic scattering experiments and their connection to our understanding of the collinear parton densities that describe the longitudinal momentum structure of the proton. Particular emphasis is placed on the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider, which is currently under intense development towards realisation in the early 2030s at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the USA and the Large Hadron electron Collider, which is a proposed final upgrade to the CERN LHC for the 2040s.
