The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is a crucial observable in assessing the so-called Standard Model of Cosmology. Nevertheless, only a small fraction of the information available in the CMB has been extracted to date. Planck is the third generation space mission targeted at the CMB. Launched in May 2009, it is currently surveying the microwave sky with an unprecedented combination of frequency coverage, angular resolution, and sensitivity, providing us with the most tantalizing CMB dataset ever collected. The challenge we are facing is to analyze Planck data with minimal waste of information and tight control of all sources of error, including systematic effects of instrumental and astrophysical origin. I will review the status of the mission and its main objectives, with special attention to the properties, performance and role of the Low Frequency Instrument.
