The goal of the Pierre Auger experience is to study the energy spectrum, the arrival directions, and the composition of the highest energy cosmic rays. After describing the detector, we will delve into the intricate relationship of these three quantities and present some of the latest results of the experience. We will explain why it has become absolutely crucial to measure the composition at the highest energies using the surface detector, and outline our efforts on applying state-of-the-art data analysis techniques to achieve this goal.
