Description
Rare Kaon Decays provide us with an excellent opportunity to
shed light on the flavour structure within the Standard Model and
beyond. This is because these processes are dominated by short distance
physics and the prediction in the Standard Theory are not affected by
hadronic uncertainties, a condition seldomly realised in meson decays.
After a brief physics introduction and a review of the experimental
state-of-the art, the speaker will illustrate a new experiment proposed at
the SPS to measure about 100 SM events of the decay K+--> p+nn -bar. The
proposal builds on the infrastructure and expertise of the previous CERN
kaon experiment (NA48) to provide excellent physics potential at
relatively small marginal cost.
