Description

In 1974 Hawking predicted that black holes are not ‘black’, but emit thermal radiation at a well defined temperature. Unfortunately, such an effect is, in ordinary situations, too small to be detected. In 1981 Unruh predicted that the analog of this effect is present in condensed matter systems, and, remarkably, recently Steinhauer (2016 and 2019) provided the first experimental evidence of (spontaneous) analog Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein condensates. In this talk I will review these remarkable advances and discuss more recent experimental/theoretical results.
