"Alpha’ phase formation under irradiation in ODS steels"

Abstract :

One of the problems encountered in fission and fusion reactions in reactor is the irradiation of structural materials with fast neutrons. Nanostructured materials such as ferritic-martensitic steels reinforced by dispersion of oxides (ODS steels) have been specially developed to resist to irradiation and high temperatures, with improved mechanical properties under extreme conditions in reactor. These steels are composed of a centered cubic metal matrix (FeCrW or FeCrMo) reinforced by nano-oxides of titanium and yttrium. As the matrix is mainly a Fe-Cr system, a chromium-rich phase, called alpha’, can precipitate under irradiation (as observed in steels irradiated with neutrons), and weaken the system. The first objective of the thesis is to study the impact of the dispersion of nano-oxides and irradiation conditions on the formation of the alpha’ phase in an ODS steel, MA957. The second objective is to focus on the question of the representativeness of ion irradiations compared to neutron irradiations.

The experimental approach used in this work consisted in using ion beams delivered by the accelerators of the JANNuS-Saclay and JANNuS- Orsay platforms to irradiate with heavy ions two ODS steels (MA957 and UP52, containing 14% Cr), as well as a steel without nano-oxide (UP50), at different damage doses, at a temperature of 400°C. These ion irradiated ODS steels were compared to the MA957 ODS steel after thermal aging and to the same steel after neutron irradiation at 412°C at a dose of 50 dpa. The samples upon reception, after heat treatment, and after irradiation with ions and neutrons were characterized at the nanometric scale using conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy filtered TEM (EFTEM), and occasionally atom probe tomography (APT).

The characteristics of the nano-oxides (size, density) and of the alpha’ phase (size, Cr content) were in particular obtained for each condition. The nucleation and growth of this alphaphase were investigated first by in situ ion irradiations in a TEM and then by ex situ ion irradiations. The alphaphase is observed from a dose of 1.5 dpa for a damage rate of approximately 1x10-4 dpa/sec, at 400°C, which had not been reported in an ODS steel in the literature before this work. The evolution of this alphaphase has been studied for higher irradiation doses: a steady state was demonstrated in particular between 4.5 and 8 dpa. The precipitation of this alphaphase under ion irradiation has specific characteristics, which differ from those observed under thermal aging: there is a systematic chromium depletion at grain boundaries after irradiation, as well as an anticorrelation between the alpha' precipitates and nano-oxides. Logically, by studying two steels of identical composition which contain or not nano- oxides, it was also shown that the presence of these nano-oxides delays the precipitation of alpha’. The impact on the characteristics of the alpha’ phase precipitation of different irradiation parameters relevant for the comparison with the neutron irradiation was studied, in particular the size of the cascades: it was shown that the increase in the average energy of the PKA delays precipitation. An effect of the injected interstitials was also observed: the presence of these atoms drastically limits the precipitation of the alpha’ phase. Finally, the ion irradiation results were compared with the neutron irradiation results performed on ODS MA957 steel.
