Description

The next generation of neutrino superbeam experiments will explore the matter/antimatter asymmetry in the leptonic sector through the neutrino oscillation phenomenon. The discovery and the measurement of the CP phase parameter of the PMNS (Pontecorvo Maki Nakagawa Sakata) mixing matrix requires the development of a new accelerator beams working at MW scale. The ESSnuSB collaboration proposes to upgrade the proton LINAC of the European Spallation Source currently under construction in Lund (Sweden) to produce a very intense neutrino superbeam in parallel with the spallation neutron production. The facility requires the design of a second target station with a megaton scale water Cherenkov detector located 540 km far away in Garpenberg mine. In this talk, a global overview of the project will be presented with its potentiality and the future perspectives offered by this additional facility.

ESSnuSB has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 777419.
