Niobium as the workhorse for SRF is well-established and proven procedures have lead to cutting-edge facilities such as the European XFEL and LCLS-II. But discoveries and improvements in the last 10 years and an increasing integration of material science, theory and rf diagnostics into our research area paves the way to SRF beyond niobium and starts to challenge heuristically established interpretations and believes. I will give a - highly subjective - overview of current questions and potential approaches and what the current results and plans for our research group are.
