TROPIcal Cyclones in ANthropocene: physics, simulations & Attribution

The TROPICANA project, scheduled for May/June 2024, represents a pioneering interdisciplinary effort to address the intricate challenges surrounding tropical cyclones, medicanes, and their connection with climate change. These cyclones, known for their devastating impacts, pose substantial threats to both life and property. The project adopts a multifaceted approach encompassing physics, modeling, statistical methodologies, and climate attribution studies to enhance our understanding. With a program spanning four weeks, including workshops, discussions, and public engagement initiatives, TROPICANA aims to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and project development. By delivering a perspective paper in a prestigious journal and actively pursuing additional funding to support early-career scientists, TROPICANA seeks to make a significant and lasting contribution to climate science, ultimately contributing to a more resilient future.

TROPICANA DESCRIPTION

TROPICANA (TROPIcal Cyclones in ANthropocene: physics, simulations & Attribution) is a programme, aiming to address complex issues related to tropical cyclones, medicanes, and their connection with climate change. The challenge lies in understanding and predicting the behavior of these destructive storms, especially in the context of climate change.

Current climate models struggle to replicate severe storm dynamics, creating uncertainty in projections. To overcome this, TROPICANA adopts an innovative approach involving physics, simulations, and attribution studies. It focuses on four key areas :

  1. Physics & Modeling: Investigating the physical mechanisms driving cyclones, with a focus on factors like cyclogenesis and rapid intensification.
  2. Statistical Methodologies: Using advanced techniques like artificial intelligence and statistical-dynamical downscaling to enhance simulation accuracy and correct biases.
  3. Climate Change Attribution: Assessing climate change's role in altering cyclone intensity and frequency by attributing changes in related variables.
  4. Medicanes Study: Addressing the unique challenges posed by medicanes, including tracking methods and future simulations.

The program spans four weeks, including workshops, discussions, conferences, and educational sessions. It also extends its impact to students and the public through lectures, practical training, and outreach events.

While promoting on-site participation, TROPICANA also explores hybrid options for accessibility. The project will culminate in a perspective paper in a prestigious journal, contributing valuable insights to climate science.

To fully realize its potential we strongly encourage collaborations between senior and early-career scientists.

TROPICANA promises to revolutionize our understanding of cyclones and climate change, making a lasting impact on climate science. Join us in unraveling the cyclone conundrum and building a more resilient future.
